The Sun Wheel symbolism is quite interesting. Having dabbled a bit in Runic, some scholars believe it may have derived from Etruscan which which it shares some symbols, although others lean to Greek. The Etruscan alphabet contained a circled cross, but canted so that it was an X in the circle. To the best of my knowledge, Etruscan remains untranslatable and the post would likely inspire some ambitious grad student on the road to fame.
The Greeks stumbles about the Italian peninsula around the same period, sp who could say who got what from who... it would likely be a Pyrrhic argument. ;)
